The role of society

Society plays an indispensable role in protecting its children, especially those most marginalized by violence and poverty. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Mexico has signed and ratified, explicitly states that the government has the responsibility to “protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse, while in the care of parent(s), legal guardian(s) or any other person who has the care of the child” (article 19). In reality Mexico, like many other countries, does not fulfill the obligations outlined in this treaty. The government safety nets for children and families entrapped in violence and poverty are insufficient.

Civil society needs to fill in these cracks to ensure that all children have access to their basic human rights.

"What society does to its children, its children will do to society."
