Why should we help?

The implications for children raised in these environments are devastating. They will often lead to the following consequences:
  • Less likelihood of scholastic and professional success.
  • Less likelihood in forming positive relationships.
  • More likelihood to contract stress-related illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc.

A child reared in unhealthy environments, void of healthy and lasting relationships are likely to become parents that lack the firsthand experience and the skills to provide a positive home for their children. Consequently, the patterns of violence, abuse, and abandonment from one generation are transmitted to the next. The result is yet another debilitated generation with little hope of escaping poverty.
"The violence of the adult towards the child leads to childhood terror, the child's terror leads to the adolescent's anger, and the adolescent's anger all too frequently leads to the adult's fury, as destructive to others as to the individual her/himself. Terror, anger and fury are not the ingredients of safe streets, strong families or caring communities."

U. S Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1992.
