20 years for the children of Mexico
The JUCONI Foundation started in 1989 thanks to the efforts of Sarah Thomas, Joanna Wright
de Serra and Gabriel Benitez. Together, they teamed up to transform their vision into a reality:
to create a highly professional program for street-involved children. They chose the city of
Puebla for this project.

Early experience dispelled the commonly held notion that street-involved children did not have families.
JUCONI quickly discovered that there were actually two groups of street-involved children:
1) those who live on the street and 2) those who work there yet continue to live with their
families. JUCONI later identified a third: 3) those who work in the open-air market alongside
their families.
JUCONI quickly evolved to respond to the distinct needs of each child. JUCONI was one of the
first organizations in Mexico to expand its work to include the families of street-involved
children. This advance led to systemic work with other key actors in the life of every child:
her teacher, employer, neighbors, community, etc. Each year, JUCONI works with 350 street
children and their 120 families.Due to its unique and personalized approach, 8 out of every
10 children cared for by JUCONI achieve permanent social reintegration.
The JUCONI Foundation has been internationally recognized by UNESCO for its innovative approach
and more recently by UNICEF,for offering Mexico’s "Best Practice" for its family work and strong
commitment to child rights.
In 2001, JUCONI launched the Technical Support Center (TSC) to share its expertise with other
organizations and programs catering to excluded children affected by violence. Through its TSC,
JUCONI has improved the quality of the services of thousands of children in Mexico, South America
and South Africa.
2009 is obviously a very special year for JUCONI. To honor the continued support of all donors,
volunteers and partner organizations, the JUCONI Foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary
with a very special event. Let’s celebrate together our commitment to "A world without violence".
